When Alison first contacted me about reviewing her book, I was a little hesitant since my usual genre is more crime / psychological thriller orientated and this book was primarily a Comedy Romance, with a bit of crime and mystery woven into it. However, I decided to give it a go because I'm always happy to try something new. I'm very glad I did because it ended up being an enjoyable read!
I liked Ruby as a main character and I felt like I was able to get to know her better through the diary entries that were dotted about, since they were written from her perspective and definitely brought out more of her character.
I also liked the way the present day situation with the Police Chief ran alongside Ruby arriving in America and past and present alternated between chapters.
It was entertaining being with Ruby as she faced many challenges trying to fit in with the different people around her.
There were some parts I found a tiny bit predictable, these were mostly when Hank was involved. Despite this, there was plenty of humour which made for an amusing read and drew me in.
I thought the ending was pleasing, it was the perfect way to wrap everything up and I liked the closure each character got.
Overall, I'd give this book 4 out of 5. It was witty, charming and a great light read. Although it's not my usual genre and I won't be switching from crime just yet, I still liked it and am so glad that I had the opportunity to try a new genre.
