Who Killed Vivien Morse by Diana J Febry

This is the fourth book in the DCI Hatherall series and it works just fine as a standalone. There are references to previous events but this has no effect on understanding the plot. It does however, make you want to go back and read the previous books as you are given little pieces of information by the author which pique your interest about the other books.
The beginning started off a little slow for me and struggled to hold my interest, but as I read further, I began to feel as though I was solving the mysteries alongside the detectives.
I liked the little bits of dark humour scattered throughout. I particularly enjoyed reading about Colin the dog and Dick and Gladys!
After finishing the book, I was left wanting to know more about Fiona's situation with Julien, however I'm sure that this will be developed later in the series. Other than this, I liked the ending as it wrapped things up nicely, but it would've been nice to have more detail about the motivations behind the events and exactly why they were committed. For me that aspect felt slightly rushed as personally, I prefer it when it's explained thoroughly.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's a traditional English mystery with interesting characters and a great plot.

This is the first book in the Inspector McLean series that I have read and although many books came before it and there were references to past cases, it works brilliantly as a standalone novel. The fact that I hadn't read the other books didn't prevent me from following what was going on. However, for a deeper understanding of McLean's character and past, it would definitely be worth reading the previous books.
The story isn't very fast-paced as the case itself moves along quite slowly, therefore it took me longer to read than usual and a little longer to get interested and fully absorbed. There were plenty of rich descriptions throughout though which I think eventually were the thing that involved me in the book.
At the start, I didn't really care about the characters or find myself connecting with them. However I did find that by the end, I was quite attached to McLean. I enjoyed the conclusion and the wrap up of the mystery. I especially liked the final revelation from Emma.
I also really liked that the setting was Scotland. I felt that it gave a unique edge to the book as the use of Scottish words and phrases helped to involve me at a greater level and feel as though I could hear the characters speak.
Overall, I'd give the book 3.5/5. I did enjoy it eventually and would recommend it for fans of detective novels who don't mind a slightly slower pace.

The Fifth Letter by Nicola Moriarty

'The Fifth Letter' began really well, I immediately became immersed. Straight away I loved the direction the story was heading and felt like I knew each character and their individual quirks almost like I was involved in the group.
I rather liked the style of narration but at times I did find it difficult to keep track. Occasionally it would just switch back to the present and it would take me a while to adjust. However, once I got used to this, I began to expect it and then after a while didn't even notice.
As the letters were gradually revealed, the pace got faster and the level of tension increased. Secrets and lies started to come to light and new twists hid around every corner. I read the second half in one go!
Additionally, I loved that I thought I knew each character but then more and more would be revealed and my perception of each woman was constantly shifting. Each had their own problems at home which were completely different than how they first appeared. Could I trust their letter? Could I even trust Joni's narration?
On top of all this, I simply couldn't guess who the fifth letter was from. I suspected every single person apart from who it actually was! Moriarty expertly threw suspicion all over the place. I can't emphasise enough how intense it became towards the conclusion. I was on edge the whole time.
I REALLY enjoyed the ending. It was as close as a book has come to my perfect ending for a long time. It tied everything up and the Epilogue was perfect. I'd give 'The Fifth Letter' 4.5 out of 5! I definitely recommend this book. Dramatic, secretive and twisty. Can you really trust your friends?

Eyes Like Mine by Sheena Kamal

Fairly mixed views on this one. When I first began reading, I was instantly riveted as Nora's backstory was progressively revealed. Nora is a very compelling protagonist despite her many flaws and traumatic background. Her search for the daughter she gave up 15 years prior throws up many distressing memories and ghosts from her past which she'd sooner keep locked away.
I thought that there was just the right amount of description in there to give a sense of place, but not so much that it drags and bogs you down with detail.
The book also touched on issues like race and homelessness which I felt were an important aspect.
The pace really picked up as the end of the book neared but then I felt a bit let down by the conclusion. I know that it's meant to leave room for more books, but I really prefer neat endings. I just felt like the plot lost its way a little at the end and that a lot of questions were left open which I think could've been wrapped up a bit more while still enabling a sequel.
Overall, I'd give this book 3.5/5. I did enjoy it, I thought it had a good pace and a feisty heroine but the ending let it down for me.
