Welcome!
I post book reviews as often as possible but at least once a week every Wednesday! I hope they help you to find some new books that you'll love as much as I did!
So, so, so close to 5 out of 5. So close. All the way through I was thinking that it was going to be the next in my five star favourites but the end didn't quite do it for me.
I really liked the dialogue of Mrs Cauley and Bridget, but I found Mahony a difficult character to engage with and for a while it was difficult to care about him. By the middle of the book, he started to grow on me as his relationship with Mrs Cauley developed. The characters felt real and the majority were really engaging. The story kept me guessing and enthralled throughout and there were dozens of beautifully written scenes and tense, edge of the seat moments. There was even a certain scene involving a dog which actually made me cry. Something a book hasn't done for a very long time. The whole book was so skilfully written but I'm not one for a cliffhanger and a certain part of the story was left as one. I also felt there could've been a little more detail to the rest of the ending. As there were many questions remaining in my mind which I think would've been a nice addition. Overall, I'd give this book 4.5 out of 5. It was a brilliant book but just missing a little something. It's a murder mystery with a ghostly edge and I would definitely recommend giving it a read. This is the sort of book where you need to give yourself time to sit down and read without distractions. It's best enjoyed if you can get engrossed and really involved with the characters and the storyline. It took me a while to realise this, so I didn't enjoy the first half of the book as much as I did the second part.
Once I got into the story, I really enjoyed it. It kept me hanging on for the whole of the rest of the book, on edge just waiting for the finale. There were lots of twists, and just as you thought Siggy was gone for good, he reappeared again and again. I liked the range of different characters in the book, from 'do-gooder' Dr Knox to hard-faced Mr Bray. Dr Knox and Sutter have the most unlikely but brilliant friendship. Sutter who comes across as tough and aggressive shows his more caring side towards Dr Knox and they work so well as a team. Overall I would give this book 3 out of 5. It's a great storyline eventually and there are some brilliant characters, however, I think it is a bit long winded in places. If you have time to give it your full attention, then it is enjoyable. If not, then it feels like a bit of an effort until you get about half way through. This e-book was provided to me for free in exchange for an honest review. Yet another delightful Miss Seeton mystery. They just keep coming, each as charming as the last.
'Miss Seeton By Moonlight' had me chuckling and smiling throughout. There were some beautiful descriptions of the English countryside that made me want to get out my sketch pad and draw too! I felt like the reader got to see more of Miss Seeton's sweet and vulnerable side in her dialogue with Anne and Bob which I enjoyed. Again the ending was a satisfying one, completely unexpected and kept me guessing right until the last minute. For me, the book took a little longer to get going than usual, which was disappointing. I wasn't hooked until about half-way through, but once I got there, I stayed engrossed. I give it 4 out of 5 and recommend reading it for a light-hearted and humorous mystery. This is the second Miss Seeton mystery I have read (see my other review here) and I must say, they definitely don't disappoint. As soon as I started reading it, I had to keep reminding myself that it was written by Graham Norton. THE Graham Norton. I didn't expect it to be so good!
I began reading Holding on the train to London and I didn't look up once. I was drawn in right from the beginning and didn't want to put it down. It was so disappointing when I had to get off the train! I loved the way it was quick to get right into the crime and didn't drag on with a lot of extraneous scene setting. Instead, it jumped straight into the characters and the crime and set the scene throughout the book avoiding the block of description at the beginning, which most books include. I found the characters to be suitably gripping and each had their own story which intertwined with the others. Each character was developed really well and their personalities came through. The ending was fantastic and completely unexpected and there were twists and turns throughout the book. For the first time on my blog, I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 and it's officially going to be the first in my 'five star favourites' category. I loved it so much that I'm going to buy myself a hard-copy of the book. I would absolutely recommend giving this a read, it's out tomorrow on the 6th of October. I hope you'll love it as much as I did. This e-book was provided to me free in exchange for an honest review. |
