About

Picture
Sequel to the bestselling 'Bongo Fury' novella. Follow Jimmy as he gets into much deeper trouble in this black humoured, Northern Irish noir.

My Review

This book is the second in the Bongo Fury series by Simon Maltman and as was the case with book one, there's an amazing amount of story packed into just 57 pages!
I think it definitely helps to read the first in the series, as for me Jimmy felt a lot more real in this book than he did in the first, but it was the combination of the two which helped me to get to know him and learn more about him as a character.
I found myself rooting for Jimmy throughout the book and I was quickly swept up in the fast-paced and gritty storyline.
I liked how tense the ending was. I would've loved it to have been a little bit more detailed, but it does make sense if it's going to lead on to the next book in the series.
Overall, I enjoyed it. It's down to earth, short but sweet and completely action packed.

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Anything You Do Say by Gillian McAllister! I took part in the cover reveal for this book not too long ago, so I'm very excited to be able to share my review as part of the blog tour.
Thanks to Jenny for organising everything! :)
Don't forget to check out the rest of the stops!

The Synopsis

Picture
Joanna is an avoider. So far she has spent her adult life hiding bank statements and changing career aspirations weekly.

But then one night Joanna hears footsteps on the way home. Is she being followed? She is sure it's him; the man from the bar who wouldn't leave her alone. Hearing the steps speed up Joanna turns and pushes with all of her might, sending her pursuer tumbling down the steps and lying motionless on the floor.

Now Joanna has to do the thing she hates most - make a decision. Fight or flight? Truth or lie? Right or wrong?

My Review

Picture
I think what really makes this book so addictive, is that not only is it thought-provoking, it also has a fantastically executed and unique plot. Two stories run parallel, Conceal and Reveal, almost like two books in one! The originality of the plot alone gets 5 out of 5 from me and I really enjoyed how it was written. The attention to detail was brilliant and the writing had me hooked.
The characters were well-developed and engaging, Joanna in particular. I went on two totally different journeys with her and I was constantly on the edge of my seat. Reading this book, you can't help but wonder what you would've done in that situation.
I haven't read Gillian's first book, Everything But the Truth, but my word, I think I've definitely missed out by not reading it if it's anything as good as this one!
Overall, I'm giving Anything You Do Say 5 out of 5 and adding it to my Five Star Favourites Shelf! It was original, memorable and addictive. I will certainly be looking out for more from Gillian McAllister.
Anything You Do Say will be published by Penguin in e-book 19/10/17 and paperback 25/1/18

Today is my stop on the blog tour for The Blind. Thank you to Anna for organising the tour and don't forget to check out the rest of the stops!

The Synopsis

Picture
Every morning, psychiatrist Sam James gets up at six forty-five. She has a shower, drinks a cup of coffee, then puts on her make-up.

She ignores the empty bottles piling up by her door.

On this particular morning, Sam is informed of a new patient’s arrival at Manhattan’s most notorious institution. Reputed to be deranged and dangerous, Richard is just the kind of impossible case Sam has built her reputation on. She is certain that she is the right doctor to treat such a difficult patient.

But then Sam meets Richard. And Richard seems totally sane.

Let the mind games begin.

My Review

Picture
I really loved the premise and synopsis of this book and I jumped at the chance to join the blog tour. I'm extremely interested in psychology and Sam's profession drew me in before I'd even opened the pages.
I quickly found myself immersed in her world and swept up in her life and work. It was fascinating to see into her mind and hear things from her point of view. I thought that this style of narration worked perfectly for the book.
As for the storyline itself, it was quite different from what I had been expecting and wasn't really my usual genre. If the synopsis hadn't made it seem like a thriller, I probably wouldn't have given it a go, but I'm really glad I got the opportunity to read it because although it didn't feel like a thriller, it was a great read which I enjoyed.
For me, the pace could've been a little quicker, but that's just my personal taste. It still had me reading on and engaged.
I think that it's important to note that this book deals with various sensitive issues which could potentially be triggering and is quite heavy in places. For example, there's a conversation (which I wouldn't say is a spoiler as it occurs quite early in the book and isn't part of the main plot) about an animal which if you're anything like me, is worth skipping over. So do be warned.
Despite the quite heavy content, I kept coming back for more of this book and liked the way the story unfolded to reveal more and more about the characters. It felt to me like a character driven book which I actually really enjoyed.
I must admit that I did guess the ending and the twist, but this didn't make it any less enjoyable.
Overall, I'm giving The Blind 4 out of 5. It was a fascinating read.
