Blue Light Yokohama by Nicolás Obregón

The Synopsis

Picture
Inspired by a real-life murder Blue Light Yokohama is set among Tokyo's glitteringly busy streets, where a family of four were killed in their own home. The first detective died trying to solve it. Now it is up to Inspector Iwata to unravel the truth . . .

Recently transferred to Tokyo's homicide department, Inspector Kosuke Iwata is assigned a new partner and a secondhand case - a family of four murdered in their own home by a killer who painted a hideous black sun on the bedroom ceiling before leaving in broad daylight. The original investigator was said to have killed himself by leaping from the city's famous rainbow bridge.
Iwata and his partner Sakai must track a murderer he's sure is only just getting started. Impeded by corrupt fellow officers and haunted by a past he can't escape, Iwata knows time is running out. Before he's taken off the case, or, far worse, the killer strikes again.
Because Iwata doesn't know exactly what the symbol means, but he knows what the killer is trying to say: I am here. I am not finished.

My Review

Picture
Blue Light Yokohama is the first in the Inspector Iwata series and already it's off to an outstanding start with this dark and masterfully written first instalment.
The book is set in Japan which is really brought to life through vivid, vibrant descriptions of Tokyo and the well-developed, complex characters. The descriptions of the murders are graphic, but I think that this is to be expected and adds to the intensity of the plot. The fact that it's inspired by real life murders makes it all the more harrowing and the details like the black sun and the song are haunting and macabre.
While the plot may not be fast-paced, it takes you on a journey which is completely worth it once everything comes together and all of the twists and turns and small details click into place at the end.
Overall, I'm giving Blue Light Yokohama 4 out of 5! It's engrossing, haunting and vividly described. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this series develops and I can't wait for the next book!

About the Author

British born of a Spanish father and a French mother, Nicolás Obregón grew up between London and Madrid. As a travel writer, Nicolás has had an extensive experience of Japan, but the beginning of his fascination with the country came from watching Japanese cartoons as a young boy. The inspiration for Blue Light Yokohamais easy to mark. During his first trip to Japan, Nicolás came across an article about a real-life crime which was to haunt him. Sixteen years after this atrocity, the case remains unsolved. Nicolás Obregón is a graduate of the acclaimed Birkbeck Creative Writing Masters course and a former bookseller for Waterstones.

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for the latest book in the Detective Kay Hunter series, Hell to Pay!
Picture
There's lots of fabulous bloggers taking part, so don't forget to take a look at the other stops on the tour too! Thank you to the lovely Emma for organising the tour! I'm very grateful to be part of it! :)

The Synopsis

Picture
When a road traffic accident on a dark autumn night uncovers a disturbing conspiracy, Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter’s investigation exposes a ruthless serial killer exploiting vulnerable young women.

With her enemies unmasked and her career spiralling out of control, Kay’s determination to seek vengeance for the victims brings her dangerously close to those who want to silence her.

Undeterred, she uncovers the real reason behind a plot to destroy her career and sets in motion a terrifying chain of events.

Could Kay’s need for revenge be her undoing, or will she survive to see justice served?

Hell to Pay is a gripping fast paced crime thriller, and the fourth in the Detective Kay Hunter series:

1. SCARED TO DEATH
2. WILL TO LIVE
3. ONE TO WATCH
4. HELL TO PAY

A page-turning whodunit for fans of Peter Robinson, David Baldacci and James Patterson.

My Review

A little while back I took part in the cover reveal for not only Hell to Pay, but also the previous Kay Hunter book, One to Watch, as I'd heard so many wonderful things about them. However, until a few weeks ago, I'd never read any of the books in the series! I was so excited to finally get a chance to see for myself what all the fuss was about!
Straight away, I could see why everyone loves Amphlett's writing. The pace was wonderfully fast right from the beginning and didn't relent until the very end. I was immediately swept up in the completely original plot and there were plenty of twists which kept me hooked so I couldn't put it down!
Even though I hadn't read the other books in the series, I understood everything and feel that it worked just fine on its own, although I think that if I'd read the previous books first, it might've added to my enjoyment of this book as it would've helped me to understand Kay's character in more depth.
Overall, I'm giving Hell to Pay 4.5 out of 5! It was fast-paced and twisty and I'll definitely be going back to read the previous Kay Hunter books!

Zenka by Alison Brodie

The Synopsis

Picture
Devious, ruthless, and loyal.

Zenka is a capricious Hungarian with a dark past.

When cranky London mob boss, Jack Murray, saves her life she vows to become his guardian angel – whether he likes it or not. Happily, she now has easy access to pistols, knives and shotguns.

Jack discovers he has a son, Nicholas, a male nurse with a heart of gold. Problem is, Nicholas is a wimp.

Zenka takes charges. Using her feminine wiles and gangland contacts, she will make Nicholas into the sort of son any self-respecting crime boss would be proud of. And she succeeds!

Nicholas transforms from pussycat to mad dog, falls in love with Zenka, and finds out where the bodies are buried – because he buries them. He’s learning fast that sometimes you have to kill, or be killed.

As his life becomes more terrifying, questions have to be asked:

How do you tell a mob boss you don’t want to be his son?

And is Zenka really who she says she is?

My Review

After reading Brake Failure and really enjoying it despite it not being my preferred genre, I was really excited for Zenka as it's a lot closer to my genre and so I jumped at the opportunity to review it!
Once again, Alison didn't disappoint and has provided another entertaining and enjoyable read.
It's a darkly funny black comedy that had me laughing out loud at times. This humour is mixed with plenty of thrills and tension which made for the perfect blend, forcing me to read on and remain completely engaged throughout.
The characters felt well-rounded and fully developed. In particular, Zenka, whose individuality and uniqueness really comes through and is enhanced by her accent which shows off her personality well and makes her all the more memorable.
The plot was distinctive and fabulously quirky and it's certainly something I'll remember.
Overall, I'm giving Zenka 4.5 out of 5. It's funny, engaging and unique. I really enjoyed it.

The Synopsis

Picture
‘There you have it—’ Miss Dimont smiled and, lifting
her dark glasses, turned to face the trainee reporter ‘—in a nutshell.
A mystery death. Needs looking into, wouldn’t you say?’

Death stalks the beaches of Devon

With its pale, aquamarine waters and golden sands, the shoreline at Temple Regis was a sight to behold. But when an unidentifiable body is found there one morning, the most beautiful beach in Devon is turned into a crime scene.
For Miss Dimont – ferocious defender of free speech, champion of the truth and ace newspaperwoman for The Riviera Express – this is a case of paramount interest, and the perfect introduction for her young new recruit Valentine Waterford. Even if their meddling is to the immense irritation of local copper Inspector Topham…

Soon Miss Dimont and Valentine are deep in investigation – why can nobody identify the body, and why does Topham suspect murder? And when a second death occurs, can the two possibly be connected?

My Review

Picture
After reading Riviera Express and really enjoying it, I couldn't wait to dive straight in to Resort to Murder.
It's the second delightful book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone, I think it's greatly enhanced by reading Riviera Express too, as the colourful and well-developed cast of characters who make a reappearance feel really familiar now. Miss Dimont is once again wonderfully clever and eccentric and she really makes this classic whodunnit come alive.
The book is set in Devon which is beautifully described and makes for the perfect setting for this light-hearted, cosy crime. With an engaging and entertaining storyline, this book kept me reading and guessing the whole way through.
If you fancy a classic whodunnit and an enjoyable, light-hearted read, I'd definitely recommend giving this series a go.
Overall I'd give Resort To Murder 4 out of 5. It was witty and well-written with a fantastically cosy mystery and I'm looking forward to reading more about Miss Dimont in future!
